With all the rumors out there that the Sixers may be close to a fire-sale, and that Andre Iguodala might be available to a team willing to take Samuel Dalembert, I was wondering what a trade would look like for the Wolves.
If we're assuming that the Sixers don't want to take back any contracts beyond the end of this year a potential trade might look like this ...
Wolves Receive:
Andre Iguodala
Samuel Dalembert
Rodney Carney
Sixers Receive:
Mark Blount
Brian Cardinal
Ryan Gomes
Damien Wilkins
Utah's 2010 1st Round Pick
With the expiring contracts of Blount, Cardinal and Wilkins along with the partially-guaranteed contract of Gomes this trade would save the Sixers only $2.8 million this season, but it would lower the team's payroll for 2010-11 by over $15 million and give them over $10 million in cap space for next summer.
The Wolves, on the other hand, would be waiving good-bye to their cap space for good. In the summer of 2011, when Dalembert's contract would come off the books, the Wolves would have a payroll of around $57 million. Even if the team improved enough to send their 2011 first-rounder to the Clippers (only protected in the top-10) you would still have to add Ricky Rubio and two high draft picks from this year to the players already guaranteed a contract. Let's say that the team drafts
Evan Turner and
Donatas Motiejunas this year. Their roster would look something like this ...
PG: Rubio, Flynn, Sessions
SG: Turner, Ellington
SF: Iguodala, Brewer
PF: Love, Motiejunas
C: Jefferson, Hollins
That's an extremely talented, and well-rounded, team for only $57 million. You also still have the option of flipping Flynn or Sessions for an upgrade at another position as well as using the mid-level exception year after year.
Well, what say you? Would it be worth it?
