Past Picks: 1-5 |
6-10
Scott Van Pelt: This is Scott Van Pelt in the ESPN studios for an ESPN Now. LeBron James was the number one pick of the first ever NBA Fantasy Draft earlier tonight, going to the Los Angeles Clippers, and was followed by Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade in the top-5. In the NFL, Brett Favre announced that he is voiding all ties with the Green Bay Packers organization and that, and I quote, “Green Bay is the stinky brown eye of the United States.” And in baseball, Nick Punto of the Minnesota Twins has tested positive for Performance Enhancing Drugs and has been suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball. Now let’s send it back to Stuart Scott and the ESPN NBA crew for the remainder of the 2010 NBA Fantasy Draft.
Stuart Scott: Welcome back to the Theater at Madison Square Garden! Before we get back into this thing let’s send it to the podium for the next pick.
Stern: With the 11th pick of the 2010 NBA Fantasy Draft the New York Knicks select Derrick Rose.
Crowd: BOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
Scott: Well the New York crowd here tonight evidently is unhappy about that last pick. There may have been some bigger names available but I think this is a good pick for the Knicks.
JVG: We’re hitting an interesting part of the draft now Stu. If you want a proven player they’re going to be 27 or older, but if you want a young player with potential they’re going to have some holes. Rose may not be and MVP yet, but he still has plenty of room to get better and may be the best available point guard for Mike D’Antoni’s system.
Bilas: I think it makes sense as well. Another team may have gone with an Al Jefferson in this position, but New York has to find players that fit a specific system and Rose will thrive as a point guard there.
Jackson: He will continue the long lineage of GREAT Knicks point guards.
Scott: (Can’t we replace this guy? There’s nobody? Start calling people, get ANYBODY to replace him) YES! He can follow in your footsteps Mark. Let’s send it to the podium for the announcement of the next team.
Stern: The 12th pick of the NBA Fantasy Draft will be selected by the Golden State Warriors.
Scott: Well, guys, who do the Warriors select here?
Bilas: Well, Jefferson was mentioned, maybe the best low post offensive player in the league, which makes him a little surprising he is still on the board, but his deficincies on defense make him tougher to ear mark as your cornerstone to your franchise. Still, for what’s left on the board, he may be the best value. That is of course they replace Don Nelson, otherwise they might as well select Dirk Nowitzki here.
JVG: I like Danny Granger here, he is the best wing player available, plays very well on both ends, and is an elite scorer. He fits Don Nelson in terms of offense, and his defensive ability can make the Warriors a force on defense even on accident.
Jackson: Guys, I can’t believe no one has mentioned Steve Nash here, he is a multiple time MVP award winner, one of the most exciting players in the league, and he would instantly make all you additional picks easier, because they will all be better players with him as their point guard.
Scott: stunned silence
Bilas: Come again?
Jackson: Nah, I’m just messing with you guys, Steve Kerr just emailed me and told me to say that stuff, I know, what an idiot huh?
Bilas: Actually, while he is older, and tough to build a franchise around, and you can probably get him at the end of the round, maybe even the 2nd round, but all of your rationale made sense… I was about to put my Parka on because I thought Hell had just frozen over.
Jackson: Are you kidding me? You would take Steve Nash over Tracy McGrady? You guys are ridiculous! Its obvious none of you had NBA careers, you jus-
Bilas: And he’s back, the village idiot indeed did not find his way home.
Scott: , here comes Stern.
Stern: With the 12th pick in the NBA Draft, the Golden State Warriors select Danny Granger.
Bilas: Well I think we’ve seen almost all of the young, franchise-changing players taken here in the first 12 picks. There is still some top talent remaining, but I think it’s going to be tough to find somebody who is 27-years-old or younger and has shown the ability to be the best player on a championship team.
JVG: What about Tony Parker? He’s won a Finals MVP award so he evidently can be the best player on a championship team.
Bilas: If you truly believe that Parker was more important to that team than Tim Duncan for the Spurs than I don’t think I can help you.
Jackson: Guys, argue all you want about Parker vs. Duncan but the real MVP of the Spurs is Manu Ginobili. The guy puts up the same numbers as Kobe on a per-minute basis, which places him slightly ahead of Michael Jordan in my book.
Scott: Crap, not this again.
JVG: Mark, I’m getting a little tired of you trashing Michael Jordan. This guy went 4-0 against your teams in playoff series and averaged 32.3 points, 6.6 rebounds and 5.5 assists while doing it. And even more impressively he averaged 35.7 points, 9.5 rebounds and 8.3 assists against your Knicks team in 1989. I’d like to see your beloved Kobe do that.
Jackson: I didn’t play Jordan in 1989. I was sitting on a beach in Puerto Escondido sipping on an Arnold Palmer. It was the best vacation of my life.
Bilas: Oh no. He’s blocked it out. I can’t believe this idiot’s brain is strong enough to actually take part in selective memory.
Scott: Just another item to add to Michael Jordan’s resume. Let’s send it to the commissioner.
Stern: With the 13th pick in the 2010 NBA Fantasy Draft, the Phoenix Suns select Joe Johnson.
Bilas: Nice pick there. He’s a little older than some of the other players available but he is a bonafied stud.
JVG: That’s gross.
Stern: The Miami Heat will be selecting 14th. Thank you, thank you very much (in a poor Elvis impersonated voice)
Scott: Great, now Stern is acting like a douche too, and we’re only half way.
Jackson: Guys, remember Glenn Rice?
Bilas: What?
Jackson: Glenn Rice? Remember him?
Bilas: Yeah
Jackson: He was good. Oh, and Rony Seiklay
Bilas: Your point Mark?
Jackson: Well Miami is picking now…
Bilas: -
Jackson: Those guys played for Miami. Hello.
Bilas: You’re an idiot Mark, a full on idiot.
Jackson: You don’t believe they played for Miami? You’re the idiot.
Bilas: Of course they played in Miami, what the hell does that have to do with this pick?
Jackson: I don’t know. Remember Harold Miner?
Bilas: Shoot me.
Scott: How about after Stern announces the pick? He is on his way.
Stern: With the 14th pick in the NBA Fantasy Draft, The Miami Heat select Al Jefferson.
Bilas: Very good pick, best offensive low post player in the league, young guy, great dude, apparently gets to follow in the footsteps of Glenn Rice, Rony Seiklay, and Harold Miner…
Jackson: Oh so when you bring them up, its considered smart analysis?
Bilas: -
Jackson: Oooh, and Tim Hardaway.
Stern: The Charlotte Bobcats will be picking next.
Scott: I’m almost afraid to ask, but who do you guys think should be the next pick?
JVG: It’s getting really hard right now.
Jackson: That’s what she said.
Scott: HA! Nice one.
JVG: Like I was saying ... Teams are really choosing between talent and potential now. Do you take Tim Duncan, who is arguably the best PF of all time and still one of the top players in the league, even though he probably only has three more years at a high level ... Or do you take somebody like Brook Lopez, who isn’t as good but will be around a lot longer and may someday be an All-Star?
Bilas: I know that every team enters a draft like this hoping to win the next 10 championships, but I think that if you can win even one with your new roster than tonight will have been successful. That’s why I would go with the best available player and hope that too many other teams reach for lesser talented players based on potential.
Scott: Well we’re about to find out which philosophy the Bobcats are going to follow. Let’s send it to the Commissioner.
Stern: With the 15th pick in the 2010 NBA Fantasy Draft, the Charlotte Bobcats select Pau Gasol.
Scott: Apparently the Bobcats couldn’t make up their minds so they went with somebody who can help now and also might be around for a little while.
Bilas: Gasol is 29-years-old, which isn’t old, but isn’t exactly young either.
SVG: He is one of the most talented big men in the game though. It’s just a shame that he has to be the best player on a team. He’d look much better as a team’s second star, much like he was in LA.
Jackson: The people in North Carolina are going to love this guy, he can do everything. He can score, he can rebound, he can pass ...
SVG: Just make sure that he doesn’t have to match up with anybody that’s more physical than he is, because then he turns into a little girl.
Scott: Well there you have it everybody. We are half way through the first round. Join us after the break to find out if Rajon Rondo, Russell Westbrook and Tony Parker can start a run on young point guards. You’re watching the 2010 NBA Fantasy Draft on ESPN.
